Hello, I’m Erick

I was born in Chile and I spent some of my childhood in Japan before moving to Australia when I was 13. I am married to Jo, and we have girl and boy twins.

I became a breast surgeon because, at the time I was in medical school, care for women with breast cancer had really started to advance.   Back then, surgery was about only getting rid of disease, and it was unnecessarily invasive and mutilating.  There was little compassion for the physical and emotional scars that women would have to live with for the rest of their lives.

Oncoplastic Surgery

So I invested in learning what was then a new way of performing breast surgery, a surgical oncology approach called oncoplastic surgery. The surgical techniques derived from cosmetic breast surgery are now widely used in breast cancer surgery. The objective is to remove the tumour whilst preserving the appearance of the breast.  This isn’t always possible, and some women need to have a mastectomy, but performed correctly – as an oncoplastic surgeon I can pave the way for aesthetically pleasing reconstructive surgery.

The treatment for breast cancer can be arduous. Apart from the physical trauma of breast surgery and the side effects of treatment, it is emotionally very tough on many levels.  But with the right support, and the right surgical breast oncologist, you will get through it.

Dr Erick Fuentes is a Breast, Endocrine and General Surgeon in Sydney. He specialises in surgery for breast cancer – known as a surgical oncologist. He uses techniques learned from plastic surgery to preserve the appearance of the breast, wherever possible. If a mastectomy is unavoidable, Erick’s approach will ensure the best aesthetic outcome possible, should his patient elect for reconstructive breast surgery.

Erick completed FRACS training in General Surgery through the John Hunter Hospital in 2011. In 2012 he completed training in Breast Oncologic Surgery at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. Further training in Acute, General and Trauma Surgery was pursued at Liverpool Hospital in 2013.

Erick is highly experienced in the most recent therapeutic and diagnostic techniques for breast disease. In particular oncoplastic breast surgery that aims to remove breast cancer while preserving or reconstructing the breast.

Erick recently visited the renowned French breast surgeon, Dr Emmanuel Delay, and learned his technique of staged breast reconstruction using extended latissimus dorsi flap with fat grafting (lipofilling).

Erick’s additional skills include; diagnostic breast ultrasound and implant based single and two-stage breast reconstruction, lipofilling (also known as fat grafting).
