Dr Erick Fuentes, FRACS, MBBS, BSc (Hons)
BREAST AND ENDOCRINE SURGEON
Hello, I’m Erick
I was born in Chile and I spent some of my childhood in Japan before moving to Australia when I was 13. I am married to Jo, and we have girl and boy twins who have just started school.
I became a breast surgeon because, at the time I was in medical school, care for women with breast cancer had really started to advance. Back then, surgery was about only getting rid of disease, and it was unnecessarily invasive and mutilating. There was little compassion for the physical and emotional scars that women would have to live with for the rest of their lives.
So I invested in learning what was then a new way of performing breast surgery, a surgical oncology approach called oncoplastic surgery. The surgical techniques derived from cosmetic breast surgery are now widely used in breast cancer surgery. The objective is to remove the tumour whilst preserving the appearance of the breast. This isn’t always possible, and some women need to have a mastectomy, but performed correctly – as an oncoplastic surgeon I can pave the way for aesthetically pleasing reconstructive surgery.
The treatment for breast cancer can be arduous. Apart from the physical trauma of breast surgery and the side effects of treatment, it is emotionally very tough on many levels. But with the right support, and the right surgical breast oncologist, you will get through it.
My team and I will do everything we can to support you and make treatment more tolerable.
I wish you all the best with your treatment.
